The Iowa Department of Transportation announced Monday that the City of Cedar Rapids could go forward with traffic enforcement cameras at six locations, but denied ten others.
According to a release from the city, multiple departments collaborated to collect data, compile statistics, and submit an application to the Iowa Department of Transportation by the July 1 deadline, in accordance with a new law passed in May.
The DOT Monday approved traffic enforcement cameras on I380 northbound at Diagonal Drive and on Southbound 380 at J Avenue. They also approved use of cameras Northbound and Southbound at the intersection of Williams Boulevard and 16th Avenue SW, and Easbound and Westbound at the intersection on the 300 block of 29th Street Drive Southeast.
The DOT denied the city use of cameras on I380 at J Avenue northbound and at 1st avenue Southbound. Other intersections denied camera use include 1st Avenue at 10th Street E, 1st Avenue at L Street SW, and Edgewood Road at 42nd Street NE. The northbound ramp on Center Point Road at Collins Road NE camera was also denied.
A statement from City Manager Jeff Pomeranz said that they are working to assess the impact of the DOT’s decision on public safety. While revenue generation is not the program’s primary goal, Pomeranz added that the city is evaluating the financial impacts of the decision.
