A HAZMAT incident at Mount Mercy University resulted in Cedar Rapids Fire Department crews called to the scene.

According to a release from the Department, crews responded at approximately 3:10p.m. Monday to the Donnelly Center on the campus of Mount Mercy University for the report of a potential HAZMAT incident.

Arriving firefighters were able to successfully locate and identify a chemical leak coming from a faulty refrigerator in a lab.  The building had been evacuated prior to CRFD arrival.  No injuries were reported and all students and staff were accounted for within the first few minutes of the incident.

The chemical spilled was not dangerous, but did produce a strong odor.

HAZMAT teams removed the chemical and faulty refrigerator from the facility and provided ventilation to all three floors.  CRFD remained in place afterwards to complete the ventilation process and ensure student and staff safety before returning the building to normal operations.
