A Coralville man was arrested Friday afternoon after allegedly strangling an elderly woman.
The incident occurred on the 2000 block of Timber Lane. 39-year-old Patrick Smith of 5th Street allegedly grabbed the woman by the neck with both hands and applied tight pressure. The woman stated the strangulation continued for about 45 seconds and she could not breathe. Smith reportedly threatened to kill both the woman and her husband.
Officers noted thumb-sized bruise marks on both sides of the woman’s neck. She reportedly had a hard time speaking, swallowing constantly and rubbing her throat.
Smith was arrested and charged with Assault on an Older Individual impeding Airflow, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted.
A no-contact order was requested.
