A Cedar Rapids man who said he stole a car just so he could drive it around was arrested for felony theft.

At approximately 1:22pm Sunday, 30-year-old Austin Christensen of Finch Court NE was seen entering a 2017 Chevy Malibu parked on the 100 block of South Clinton Street.  The victim observed Christensen turn west on Washington Street.

Police located the Chevy in front of the AutoZone store on Highway 1 West, with Christensen allegedly trying to enter the stolen vehicle. After he was detained, Christenesen reportedly admitted to the vehicle theft, and stated, “I was just going to drive it around.”

The vehicle was undamaged and nothing was found missing from the Malibu.

Christensen was taken into custody and charged with 1st degree Theft, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to ten years if convicted.
