A new documentary about Iowa City native and former Saturday Night Live writer Harper Steele is now available on Netflix.
“Will & Harper,” which details the story of Steele and longtime friend and SNL collaborator Will Farrell, was picked up by the streaming service after it premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary follows the pair’s 16-day cross-country trip from New York to Los Angeles in a vintage paneled station wagon as they discuss their relationship and Steele’s decision to come out as transgender three years ago.
The two stopped by the Deadwood and Steele’s childhood home while visiting Iowa City.
Earlier this week, Steele and Farrell appeared on “Late Night With Seth Meyers”, where they discussed the scenes at Steele’s home. Steele, who was known for riding a unicycle around Iowa City in the 1990’s, noted that while they were shooting at her former residence a unicyclist rode by, leading Meyers to proclaim Iowa City “a real unicycle hotspot”.
