Iowa City Police have charged a suspect they say beat another man with a pipe in a downtown alley.

18-year-old Edward Kellum of South Clinton Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 1:00 Tuesday afternoon. According to arrest records, Kellum and the alleged victim were in an alley near the intersection of Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue just after 8:45 on the night of September 15th. Kellum reportedly struck the other man in the back of the head with a pipe when the other man turned his back to him. The man fell to the ground, and Kellum allegedly continued beating the man until he could escape.

The reported victim had an open cut two centimeters wide on his head, as well as defensive wounds along his arms and legs. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Kellum is charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
