Iowa City man accused of entering McDonald’s after hours, trying to open donation box

Iowa City Police say a suspect entered a local fast food restaurant after hours, then tried to break into a donation box.

According to arrest records, 24-year-old Benjamin Rodgers of the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street entered the Lower Muscatine Road McDonald’s sometime after it closed early Tuesday morning and remained inside for an extended amount of time, eventually triggering an alarm. Police arrived at the scene just before 2:00 Tuesday morning and reportedly found Rodgers in the drive-thru area using several tools to try to open a donation box. A brown cigar with marijuana inside of it was reportedly found on Rodgers’ person during a search incident to arrest.

Rodgers is charged with Trespassing and Possession of a Controlled Substance – 2nd Offense. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
