A Coralville man whose gun was used in a fatal Iowa City shooting has been given a suspended sentence.

Judge Jason Burns handed down a five-year suspended sentence to 25-year-old Tramon Robinson last week. Robinson was also put on two years of probation and fined $1,025.

The shooting took place outside the former H Bar on South Van Buren Street on October 23rd of 2022. Iowa City Police say several physical fights broke out just before 2am, one of which involved Robinson. During the scuffle, a firearm in Robinson’s possession fell to the ground.  21-year-old Antonio Scotton of Cedar Rapids reportedly picked up the handgun and fired several rounds. 36-year-old Waymond Thomas, who was struck by the gunfire, died from his injuries.

Robinson has two felony convictions, and as such was ineligible to possess a handgun. He was charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years.

Scotton, who has also reached a plea deal, was charged with Voluntary Manslaughter, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, and Participating in a Riot. If convicted on all charges, he could have been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison. His sentencing is set for September 30th.
