Iowa City is moving forward to improve a major artery that connects downtown with the University of Iowa campus.
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, a agreement was approved with an engineering consultant to do preliminary design work for the Burlington Street bridge.
The improvements are long overdue; a 2021 inspection found the bridge structurally deficient. The city has set aside nearly $1.2 million for the project.
Councilor-At-Large Josh Moe mentioned at Tuesday’s meeting he’d like to look at the possibility of removing the dam adjacent to the bridge on the Iowa River, saying that it could benefit the city, the university and the waterfront.
The first phase of the project will include an environmental study.
