University of Iowa Healthcare will be asking the state Board of Regents for approval to move forward on a four-pronged improvement project at its recently acquired Downtown campus.

The Press-Citizen reports the proposal says many parts of the old Mercy Hospital are outdated and need updates to keep up with advances in medical technology.

UI Healthcare plans a renovation to each floor to improve patient care and get the building up to current standards and regulations. Operating rooms will get equipment, infrastructure and IT upgrades.  The same thing is planned for the Radiology Department.

A list of structural updates ranked by urgency would be addressed over the next ten years, with the other renovation projects taking anywhere from five to seven years.  No costs have been confirmed, but University Hospital Usage Funds will be used to complete the project.
