A new felony charge has been filed against a suspect accused of trying to illegally gain access to babies in the NICU at the University of Iowa Health Care Campus Medical Center.
UI Police say 48-year-old Robert Jones of the Iowa Lodge on the Coralville Strip ran through a locked Plexiglas door and broke the window in the sixth floor NICU at 8:30 Friday night in an attempt to gain access to a baby inside. The area is not open to the public. Jones was arrested, and a search of his person reportedly turned up a duffel bag containing a doctor’s lab coat and paperwork. A hospital housekeeping pager was found in his pants.
Jones was initially charged with 2nd Degree Burglary, 4th Degree Criminal Mischief and 4th Degree Theft. Records from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office now show a new charge of Assault While Participating in a Felony has been filed after Jones allegedly injured an officer who was trying to detain him.
If convicted on all counts, Jones faces a maximum of 17 years in prison.
