Iowa City Police say a suspect waited inside a woman’s residence while armed with a knife and assaulted her when she arrived home.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Sunrise Village manufactured housing community on Scott Boulevard just before 11:00 Thursday night. Arrest records indicate 24-year-old James Dunn was waiting inside the trailer when the woman arrived home. An argument led to a physical altercation, during which Dunn allegedly threatened her with a kitchen knife. He then reportedly assaulted the woman by trying to strangle her, leading to various minor injuries. Police say there was a witness present for the incident.

At one point, the woman tried to call 9-1-1, but Dunn allegedly threw the phone to the ground. The woman was able to call 9-1-1 from outside after retrieving the phone.

Dunn fled the scene before officers could arrive. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 11:00 Friday morning and charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, Domestic Abuse Assault of a Pregnant Person Impeding Airflow, Assault While Displaying a Weapon, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of over 37 years in prison.
