A Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy encountered an elk in Iowa City earlier this week.

The animal was spotted on Shannon Drive just before 2:45 Monday morning and has been seen at other locations in the Iowa City area over the last week. The sheriff’s office says while it’s rare to see an elk this far south, it’s not unprecedented.

If you encounter an elk, the sheriff’s office says to give it plenty of room and do not approach it. Also, they remind residents that elk are protected under Iowa Code, which includes a $1,000 fine if they are illegally killed
