A Coralville man faces a felony charge after a downtown Iowa City beating that left the victim with permanent disfigurement.

Iowa City Police say 20-year-old Kalvin Mendieta of the Western Hills Estates manufactured housing community was involved in an altercation with another man outside The Sports Column on South Dubuque Street just after 10:45 Saturday night when Mendieta punched the other subject in the face twice. The man fell backwards and hit his head on a metal rail, cracking his head open, sending him into unconsciousness and causing bleeding from his nose, mouth and the back of his head. Police say injuries to the man’s face and head will cause permanent disfigurement.  The incident was caught on video and was seen by multiple witnesses.

Mendieta was found a short time later outside the University of Iowa Sciences Library across from Joe’s Place on Iowa Avenue, where he allegedly admitted to assaulting the victim.

Mendieta is charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Disorderly Conduct, and Possession of a Fake ID. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 11 years in prison.
