A transient allegedly picked the wrong place to try to burglarize vehicles after Iowa City Police say the incidents were captured by a camera at the Johnson County Jail.

According to arrest records, the jail’s outdoor security cameras captured 18-year-old Edward Kellum checking the doors of cars parked outside the jail on South Capitol Street just before 9:30 on the morning of August 28th. A deputy sent to look for Kellum reportedly found him trying car door handles on the 400 block of South Clinton Street. Kellum reportedly showed signs of intoxication, and his breath alcohol level was measured at .10%.

Kellum is charged with Tampering With a Motor Vehicle and Public Intoxication. University of Iowa Police say sometime between 6:45 and 7:15 that same morning he caused damage at Biology Building East on North Dubuque Street. He faces a 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief charge in that case, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison upon conviction.
