An Iowa City man who claimed he hadn’t been drinking when stopped for alleged reckless driving has been charged with OWI after chemical testing showed otherwise.
Police stopped 21-year-old Juan Nunez of Wakefield Court just before 4:30 Thursday afternoon near the intersection of Dubuque and Church streets after being called in as a reckless driver and for failing to wear his seatbelt.
He showed multiple signs of intoxication, including bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance, and the odor of ingested alcohol. Nunez denied drinking, but exhibited measurable impairment on field tests. A Datamaster confirmed intoxication, with a breath-alcohol level of .283 percent, well over three times the legal limit to drive.
Nunez was charged with OWI first offense.
