An Iowa City man was arrested this week after allegedly withdrawing funds from a forged check deposit.

Police say 30-year-old John Mitchell of Clearwater Court opened up a checking account with Midwest One Bank on March 26th this year. On April 8th, Mitchell allegedly deposited a forged check for $7200.

Before the check bounced, officials say Mitchell withdrew $798.03 from his account.

After an investigation, a warrant was issued on August 23rd. Mitchell was arrested Wednesday and initially charged with 3rd degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to two years if convicted.

An arraignment has yet to be scheduled.
