City of Iowa City news release

Fall right-of-way tree plantings coming to western Iowa City; South of 6 District

During the fall, the City of Iowa City’s Parks and Forestry staff will begin planting trees in the right-of-way throughout two areas of town: western Iowa City near Mormon Trek Boulevard between Willow Creek/Kiwanis Parks and West High School, as well as areas surrounding the South of 6 District.

A map of the tree planting locations can be found on our website.

The trees will be planted in the right-of-way (the strip of land between the sidewalk and the road) throughout residential neighborhoods. City staff have selected the location and species of these trees by considering ground utilities, proximity to other trees, as well as diversity of species.

Not all addresses will receive a tree, and some could receive more than one. There is no cost to homeowners. The City will remain responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the trees planted in the right-of-way, but residents are encouraged to help water the newly planted trees if they are inclined.

Utility flags and markings may appear in the right-of-way throughout these areas as preparation for the planting project.

If you do not want a tree in your right-of-way, contact the Parks and Forestry Office at 319-356-5100 by Sept. 1, 2024. Any other questions, comments, or concerns can be sent to Tyler Baird, Superintendent of Parks & Forestry by email at tbaird@iowa-city.org or phone at 319-356-5100 ext. 2069.
