An Iowa City man who was on probation and charged earlier this month with shooting a gun at a woman at his residence now faces assault charges.

Sunday morning, 23-year-old Calvin Beemer of the Lake Ridge manufactured housing community on Mineral Point Lane had an altercation with an individual outside his home. The victim was there to see if Beemer had any of his personal belongings that he lost the night before.  Beemer allegedly became aggressive towards the man and punched him in the face numerous times, leaving swelling and bruising.

The victim was able to identify Beemer as the one who assaulted him. Beemer left the scene after the incident, and police came to his residence that night to arrest him. He then ran outside of his home and was caught after a short pursuit.

Beemer was charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury and Interference with Official Acts.

After being given a deferred judgement and probation on an armed robbery charge in 2023, sheriff’s  deputies were called to Beemer’s residence just after 2:45am August 8th. Witnesses reported he was arguing with a woman in his bedroom when he reportedly pulled out a gun, pointed it at the woman’s face, declared, “I should shoot your ass”, then fired six times. The woman was uninjured.

Beemer also allegedly destroyed the woman’s iPhone 15 when she tried to call the police. She fled and called 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s residence.

Beemer was arrested a half-hour later after initially refusing to leave the residence. Investigators executed a search warrant and reported finding various THC products and items used for packaging and selling THC products.

Beemer was charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, a Controlled Substance Violation, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, all parole violations.

With charges from both incidents, Beemer could be sentenced to over 19 years in prison.
