A Cedar Rapids man with a felony conviction was taken into custody Sunday after it was learned that he provided false information to acquire a weapon.

27-year-old Rickey Smith of 6th Street Southwest was in the gun department at Scheels in the Coral Ridge Mall the afternoon of February 17th , with the reported intent of purchasing a firearm.  He was seen on video surveillance handling five different firearms.

Smith completed an ATF firearms transaction record and allegedly marked that he was not a convicted felon, despite being convicted of armed robbery in Cook County Illinois back in 2013.

A warrant for Smith’s arrest was issued on May 13th; he was arrested and charged with providing false information to acquire a weapon and dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, both Class D felonies. If convicted on both counts, Smith could be sentenced to ten years in prison.

He is being held in the Johnson County Jail on $50,000 cash-only bond.
