An Iowa City man faces prison time after an OWI arrest allegedly found drugs on his person and in his vehicle.
Just before 2:30am Friday, 23-year-old Ethan Courter of East Court Street was traveling northbound on Highway 1 in Solon and was stopped after reportedly being clocked at 94 miles an hour in a 55 mile per hour zone. Upon contact, he allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, and slurred speech. He reportedly admitted to drinking and had a bar wristband on.
A PBT showed his breath-alcohol level at .162 percent, and a subsequent Datamaster showed a reading of .164 percent. After being placed under arrest for OWI, Courter was searched. Deputies allegedly turned up a nicotine pouch container containing baggies with a white powdered substance. More were found in the vehicle, with a total of 5 baggies and 9 grams of the substance.
Courter was charged with his second OWI after being previously convicted in January 2021 in Johnson County; he was also charged with a Class C controlled substance violation. If convicted on both counts, Courter could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison. He was released on his own recognizance later in the day and will be arraigned at a later date.
