An Iowa City man has been arrested after an investigation determined he diverted co-worker’s paychecks into a co-conspirator’s account.
According to the criminal complaint, 22-year-old Dangelo Washpun of the Quarters Apartments on Highway 6 East entered into a conspiracy with another person to steal other employees’ paychecks. Between September 1st and December 1st last year, Washpun gained access to the system at his employer, Proctor and Gamble, and changed three employees’ direct deposit information to a bank account being controlled by the co-conspirator.
A total of three paychecks were allegedly stolen, for a total of over $5800.
After an investigation, a warrant was issued on June 5th. Washpun was served on Thursday and charged with second degree Fraudulent Practice, 2nd degree Theft, and Conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony, all Class D felonies. If convicted on all three counts, he could spend up to 15 years in prison.
Washpun was released on his own recognizance pending arraignment
