A Hope House resident who claimed he was at work when in fact he was eluding North Liberty Police has been charged after cellphone records proved his alibi as false.

The incident occurred on July 23rd, when 27-year-old Ali Ali was observed near the intersection of Highway 965 and Cherry Street at around 7:50 pm speeding at 65-miles per hour in a 35-mile per hour zone. A stop was attempted, but Ali allegedly fled and a pursuit ensued.  The officer reported hitting speeds of 92 miles an hour trying to catch Ali while they were still in a 35-mile per hour zone.

Police obtained a search warrant on Ali’s cellphone, and records showed him in the general area of the pursuit, despite him insisting he was still at work at that time. Ali’s employer confirmed that he clocked out about an hour earlier than the time of the incident.  Location data also reportedly showed Ali’s phone following the route of the pursuit.

Ali told police that he was at work until just after 8pm.

He was charged with felony Eluding and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted. An arraignment was scheduled for September 9th, but Ali pleaded guilty on Thursday.  A sentencing date has not been determined.
