A motorcyclist was killed late Wednesday night when he crashed during a police chase that started on Interstate 80 near Tiffin.
According to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:21 p.m. a deputy attempted a stop on a Yamaha Sports Motorcycle for a traffic violation near Ireland Ave NW and the I-80 westbound offramp. The driver of the motorcycle refused to stop, rapidly accelerating away from the pursing deputy. The driver continued to drive erratically through Tiffin and continued westbound on Highway 6, driving in excess of 100 mph. The driver turned southbound on Highway 109 travelling into Oxford. That’s when the motorcycle driver, identified as 33-year-old Joseph Halstead of Wellman, lost control and crashed near South Augusta Ave and 295th Street NW.
Immediate lifesaving measures were performed on Halstead, but he was eventually declared deceased on the scene.
The incident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
