A man who wrote bad checks to an Iowa City business last year has been arrested after allegedly failing several times to pay the money back.
37-year-old Manuel Lugo of the Hilltop Mobile Home Park on Waterfront Drive reportedly wrote three bad checks to the Acapulco Mexican Bakery to cash in September. The amounts were for $850, $1200, and $1500. His account had insufficient funds, and the business contacted him several times over the past seven months. Lugo reportedly came up with different excuses as to why he didn’t have the money or why he was unable to pay the money back.
A warrant for his arrest was issued April 23rd; he had a hearing for his initial appearance Friday. Lugo did not request a court-appointed attorney and was released on his own recognizance. He will be arraigned at a later to-be-determined date.
