A Quad Cities man has been arrested after a reported assault in downtown Iowa City.

Iowa City Police were called to the intersection of Clinton and Washington Streets at 1:45 Sunday morning after witnesses reported 21-year-old Xander Chesmore of Davenport was on top of another person who was on their back on the ground. Chesmore’s friends reportedly held back his arm when he tried to punch the person. As the friends were pulling him off, Chesmore allegedly stomped on the victim’s face, causing a laceration to their lip.

Police say Chesmore showed signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking, and refused post-arrest breath testing. He’s charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, Chesmore faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
