An Iowa City man who was arrested and issued a no-contact order back in June, then violated it soon after, was arrested Monday after threatening the victim with a pistol.
The no-contact order was issued on June 7th; on the 25th, 41-year-old Draper Lewis was allegedly seen entering the Iowa Lodge apartment of the victim. He returned to the area later that night and reportedly struck her with a belt on the right side of her face. Lewis fled prior to officer arrival. A warrant was issued the next day.
He violated the no-contact order again on July 22nd; the victim’s daughter called police and said the woman was yelling about Lewis being in the apartment.
The two were in a confrontation Monday night at Lewis’ Miami Drive residence. He allegedly pulled out a gun, placed it on the cheek of the woman and threatened to kill her. She ran to a neighbor’s house out of fear, and Lewis fled the scene prior to police arrival. The woman’s roommate stated that Lewis has items at the residence and stays there frequently.
Officers interviewed the victim the next day, and she said that while Lewis was in the Johnson County Jail in June, he contacted her a dozen times using video calls.
Lewis was located and arrested Tuesday. He has been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense, 1st degree Harassment, Assault on a person protected by a no-contact order, Assault causing Bodily Injury, and 7 counts of violating the no-contact order. If convicted on the charges, Lewis could be sentenced to up to 13 years in prison.
