The Iowa City Community School District is discussing further limitations on cellphone use by students.

The Press Citizen reports that the School Board discussed the use of cellphones and other electronic devices during the school day in their last meeting before the school year.

Currently, students are allowed to have cellphones with them at school, but they must be put away and silenced when in class. Violators are subject to having their phones confiscated. One exception is at Tate High School, where use of cellphones and other electronic devices is prohibited unless permission is given and under direct supervision of a school staff member.

Teachers and staff are allowed to use their phones if it doesn’t disrupt the school day; bus drivers are prohibited from using their phones while operating a vehicle.

Superintendent Matt Degner said the discussion will continue at their August 27th meeting, and the board hopes to have a final decision by October.
