An Iowa City man given a deferred judgment in an armed robbery case faces a probation violation and new charges after he allegedly fired several rounds of a gun at a woman inside his residence in the Lake Ridge manufactured housing community.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Mineral Point Lane residence of 23-year-old Calvin Beemer just after 2:45 Thursday morning for a report of one person trying to shoot another with a gun. Witnesses say Beemer was arguing with the alleged victim in his bedroom when he pulled out a gun, pointed it at the woman’s face, declared, “I should shoot your ass”, then fired six times. The woman was uninjured.
Beemer also allegedly grabbed the woman’s iPhone 15 when she tried to call the police and smashed it to the ground, destroying it. The woman fled and called 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s residence.
Arriving deputies say Beemer refused to leave the residence for about a half-hour. He was eventually taken into custody and a search warrant was executed on his home. Investigators report finding various THC products and items used for packaging and selling THC products.
Beemer is charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, a Controlled Substance Violation, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 18 years in prison.
Beemer was given a deferred judgement on a 1st Degree Theft charge last year after Iowa City Police say he used a replica gun in an attempt to rob a resident of the Iowa River Manufactured housing community, unsuccessfully trying to force the victim into his car before fleeing the scene. A 1st Degree Robbery charge was dropped in a plea deal. A probation violation has been filed in that case as a result of Thursday morning’s incident.
