A Cedar Rapids man was arrested earlier this week after police were called to his residence regarding a domestic incident.

The Gazette reports officers were called to the 2400 block of C Avenue NE  Wednesday on multiple reports of an argument between 49-year-old Jeffrey Scherrer and the mother of his 1-year-old child. Callers reported hearing Scherrer saying he was going to throw a baby, and he allegedly threw the child onto a bed and fell off, leaving a visible injury on the child’s forehead.

Police were met by the woman outside the home, with Scherrer eventually joining her and allegedly beckoning the officers inside, saying they would have to fight him and shoot him. He reportedly displayed a gun and pulled the trigger three times; officers couldn’t tell if it was a toy or unloaded, so they called for backup and set a perimeter around the house.

The standoff, which lasted for  hours, ended when Scherrer came out onto the porch. He reportedly attempted to run back inside but was blocked by police, who eventually used a stun gun on him during a struggle.

Scherrer faces a litany of charges, including domestic abuse assault, child endangerment, interference with official acts, disarming a police officer, and two counts each of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and 1st degree harassment. If convicted on all charges, Scherrer could be sentenced to over 15 years in prison.
