University of Iowa pitcher Cade Obermueller is expected to return to the Hawkeye baseball program after failing to come to terms with the Texas Rangers.
The defending World Series champions selected the former City High star in the 19th round of last month’s Major League Baseball draft. But the signing deadline passed on Thursday without Obermueller agreeing on a contract. That means the left-hander is free to return to the Hawkeye program, where he would likely be the team’s ace for the 2025 season.
