Signs on the Iowa City Ped Mall warn against riding bicycles and skateboards on the plaza, but there’s no mention of mopeds.
That was apparently enough for a wanted Iowa City man who police say rode such vehicle downtown early Friday morning. According to arrest records, 43-year-old Gregory Smalls of Gilbert Court rode a gas moped through the Ped Mall just after midnight. Iowa City Police eventually caught up with Smalls outside El Rays Live & Dive on Iowa Avenue, where he allegedly provided a false name and date of birth.
Smalls had a warrant for his arrest after he reportedly skipped an initial appearance on a Driving While Suspended charge in August of 2023.
Smalls is now charged with Providing False Identity Information. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail.
