A Minnesota sex offender is accused of living in Iowa City without registering his vehicle or acquiring an Iowa identification card.
Iowa City Police pulled over a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer just after 10:30 Saturday night near the intersection of Burlington and Van Buren Streets for not having a license plate. The driver, 37-year-old Cortez Battles, reportedly stated it was his vehicle. Battles carried a Minnesota ID card indicating his home address as being in Minneapolis, but he allegedly admitted to living in Iowa City for the last month. Police say Battles has failed to register his vehicle with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office or obtain an Iowa ID card, as required.
Battles is charged with a pair of Sex Offender Registration Violations. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of four years in jail.
Battles was convicted of Criminal Sexual Abuse Involving Force against an adult woman in Minnesota in 2004.
