An Iowa City man faces drunk driving charges after allegedly crashing into a bean field between Riverside and Lone Tree and running from a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy.

Authorities were dispatched to the 5800 block of Sand Road just before 1:00 Wednesday morning on a 9-1-1 hangup.  An arriving deputy saw a 2013 Toyota Corolla that had crashed into a bean field and a man standing near the passenger side of the vehicle. The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jackson Kahle of Sheridan Avenue, reportedly began running.

Kahle allegedly ignored commands to stop and eluded the deputy. Washington County deputies were called in to assist with the search.

Kahle was eventually located and he surrendered.  Investigators say he showed signs of intoxication and told a deputy he was using Snapchat on his phone when he lost control and crashed into the ditch, rolling his vehicle several times.  Kahle also alleged that there was a minor passenger with him who fled on foot when the deputy arrived on the scene.

Kahle’s breath-alcohol level was measured at .153% at the scene and .135% on a later Datamaster test.

Kahle is charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Public Intoxication, Failure to Maintain Control, and Improper Use of an Electronic Communications Device. He could be sentenced to over one year in jail if convicted on all charges.
