Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire at a Broadway Street apartment Thursday morning that caused thousands in damage.
The Iowa City Fire Department was called to the fire at 1958 Broadway St. at 8:42 am.
Responding firefighters arrived on the scene four minutes after being dispatched and encountered smoke coming from a third-story window of the three-story apartment complex. Firefighters discovered an active fire in the kitchen of a third-floor unit and brought it under control.
All occupants had safely exited the building prior to the fire department’s arrival. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. The American Red Cross is assisting five residents who were displaced.
The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damages and remains under investigation by the ICFD Fire Marshal’s Office.
