The Iowa Supreme Court ruled Monday that they will not rehear the case that led to the banning of abortions in the state at roughly six weeks.
The law, which was passed by the Iowa Legislature in 2023, was prevented by an injunction filed by opponents including Planned Parenthood. The state’s Supreme Court ruled 4-3 on June 28th that the law is constitutional and that the injunction should be lifted. An appeal by the plaintiffs has now been denied, and the law will be effective once an Iowa District Court Judge dissolves the injunction.
Judge Jeffrey Farrell told attorneys for both sides Friday he intended to lift the injunction with at least several business days’ lead time to avoid patients and physicians currently working through scheduled appointments to be caught unaware.
Ruth Richardson, CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States, says once the law goes into effect, it will ban up to 98 percent of abortions in the state.
