Western Iowa man accused of choking victim into unconsciousness on Ped Mall for not knowing his name

A western Iowa man is accused of choking another man into unconsciousness on the Ped Mall.

Iowa City Police say 41-year-old Steven Wegner of Harlan confronted the other man for not knowing his name when the two were outside hotelVetro at 2:00 on the morning of February 10th. Wegner reportedly put the other man in a rear-naked choke, rendering him unconscious. Wegner then allegedly dropped the unresponsive man to the ground, causing him to fall on his face. The victim’s injuries included swelling, bruising and abrasions to his face.

Wegner is charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
