The City of Tiffin has come to an agreement with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office to provide them more dedicated law enforcement coverage.
The city is one of several in the county that contracts with the Sheriff’s office to provide law enforcement in lieu of funding their own police departments. For Tiffin, sheriff deputies are available to respond to emergencies at any time, but are also on patrol for an agreed-upon number of hours per month.
Tiffin is one of the fastest growing cities in the state, going from 460 residents in 1990 to 4512 in 2020.
Starting this month, the Sheriff’s office is dedicating a sergeant and a deputy full-time to the city, working 12-hour day shifts out of Tiffin City Hall.
Night shifts will be under the contract model, with at least six hours of patrol per night.
Next July, two more positions will be added, giving Tiffin 24-hour fulltime coverage. An additional two will be added the following fiscal year.
The Gazette reports each sheriff’s office position that’s devoted to the Tiffin division will be replaced at the sheriff’s office, increasing the total number of peace officer positions at the county level as the number of officers in Tiffin increases.
