The more serious charge has been dropped against one of three men accused of taking part in a Christmas morning shots fired incident near downtown Iowa City.

A charge of Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime levied against 22-year-old Gurpreet Singh was dropped on Friday as a result of a motion to dismiss hearing. A less serious charge of Reckless Use of a Firearm is still pending.

Singh was one of three suspects accused of recklessly discharging firearms just before 2:15 last Christmas morning outside an apartment building on the 500 block of East Burlington Street. The incident, which was caught on video, triggered a HawkAlert from the University of Iowa.

The other two suspects in the case, 25-year-old Satnam Singh and 21-year-old Bhupi Singh, were charged with the same counts as Gurpreet Singh.

Satnam Singh and Gurpreet Singh both live in the same building where the incident occurred.

Bhupi Singh, who lives on 6th Avenue in Coralville, entered a guilty plea to the Reckless Use of a Firearm charge last month and was fined $105. Like Gurpreet Singh, the more serious charge was dropped.

Satnam Singh skipped his arraignment in March and is currently at-large. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
