Efforts to unionize the employees at an Iowa City Bruegger’s Bagels location went down to defeat during a vote Tuesday.

The Press-Citizen reports the eligible workers voted against unionization at the Riverside Drive location during voting in the morning and afternoon hours. A vote total was not made immediately available.

The union organizers, Bruegger’s Workers United, said in a social media post that although they were saddened by the vote, it is not the end of their organization. It said, quote, “Brugger’s has made a mockery of justice with their relentless union-busting tactics, and we will not rest til they are held accountable.”

The vote became possible after the National Labor Relations Board ruled that the employees had met the qualifications to attempt to become a labor organization.

The unionization efforts did not include the downtown Iowa City Bruegger’s location.
