An Iowa City man has been given credit for time served in a case involving him allegedly pouring gasoline on another subject during a residential burglary.

Iowa City Police say in February of 2023 56-year-old Kieth Brookhart forced his way into a protected party’s bedroom, poured gasoline on the man, then struck him with a metal object multiple times. The man suffered multiple injuries.

Brookhart was charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, and violating a no-contact order. If convicted on all charges, he could have been sentenced to up to 26 years in prison.

Brookhart reached a plea deal with prosecutors last week. On Friday, the burglary charge was dismissed and Judge Andrew Chappell gave Brookhart a 30 day jail sentence on the assault charge. Brookhart was given credit for time served, and the no-contact order in the case was modified.
