The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss an assessment of needs for the Johnson County Jail.
In 2023, the county contracted with Shive-Hattery to conduct a study to examine the needs of the aging Sheriff’s Office and Jail. Sheriff Brad Kunkel issued a statement on Friday saying the report is now complete, and he plans to discuss its findings with the supervisors at Wednesday’s work session.
The report is available for viewing on the county website:  https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/jail-space-needs-assessment-report.
Kunkel stresses that the report itself does not recommend any specific changes. It instead provides a better understanding of what the sheriff’s office needs to do to better serve the residents of Johnson County in the future.
Supervisor John Green took to X on Friday to say a full discussion on the plan will have to wait until county officials and Johnson County residents have a chance to fully digest it. He says any discussion on a bond issue will have to wait for more study and input, and further action isn’t likely this year.
Wednesday’s work session is set for 9:00 Wednesday morning at the Health and Human Services Building on South Dubuque Street in Iowa City. A full discussion of the report will follow at a later date.
