About 100 people marched through Iowa City Monday night to demonstrate against government support of Iowa’s new “illegal reentry” law.

Reverend Guillermo Trevino of West Liberty, born in Texas to two Mexican immigrant parents, told the Press Citizen at the rally “If the law is enacted, it would separate families and put children at risk of losing the emotional and financial support they need to survive.”

The law was set to be enacted Monday but was blocked by a federal judge, who ruled it unconstitutional before it was allowed to go into effect.

Johnson County Supervisor Jon Green, who was joined by supervisor candidate Mandi Remington at the rally, told the crowd he believed it his solemn duty to represent them and stand up against what he called a “vicious, hateful state government.”
