The Iowa Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 decision that a near-total abortion ban should take effect throughout Iowa.

Abortion is now banned after electric pulses are detected in an ultrasound. This can happen between 6 and 8 weeks after a missed period—which is before most people realize they’re pregnant.

A ban at this stage of pregnancy will prohibit nearly 98% of abortions in Iowa.

Roe versus Wade was overturned by the United States Supreme Court in 2022; Iowa passed an abortion ban last July. A legal challenge was filed the next day and the law was temporarily suspended.

Governor Kim Reynolds and other Iowa Republicans claim the ban is the will of the Iowa people. However, polling consistently shows the majority of Iowans support abortion access. Last year, 61% of Iowans said abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart said in a statement, “Iowa women have been stripped of reproductive rights that they have maintained for more than 50 years…. Republicans went too far with this abortion ban, and Iowa voters will hold them accountable this November.”
