Two Iowa City Police officers were honored on Friday for their role in saving the life of a suicidal subject.
According to an ICPD news release, on the afternoon of May 23rd Officer Isaiah McNamee and Officer Michael Harkrider were called to a report of a suicidal man on the outside of a glass barrier on the 12th floor of a building. During the incident, McNamee stepped onto the ledge and grabbed the man’s arms, holding him against the glass to prevent him from falling. McNamee talked with the man for 20 minutes in order to gain his trust and cooperation.
Meanwhile, Harkrider coordinated efforts to get additional first responders and equipment in place to retrieve the man from the rooftop. Iowa City firefighters provided a harness and ladder and helped lift the man safely over the glass barrier.
At a special ceremony Friday at City Hall, McNamee was awarded the Commendation of Distinguished Service while Harkrider was awarded the Certificate of Special Commendation.
