An Iowa City man was arrested hours after allegedly using a stolen credit card at two convenience stores.

Police say 68-year-old Darill Johnson of East Burlington Street used the card at Kum & Go downtown and spent over $50 on items  just after 6:15am Wednesday.  Less than 15 minutes later, Johnson reportedly went into the L&M Mighty Shop and spent over $140, paying for the merchandise with the stolen card.

The victim reported the card had recently been stolen during a residential burglary.

Police caught up with Johnson inside the Old Capitol Mall at 2:45 that afternoon.  He allegedly had signs of intoxication, including bloodshot watery eyes and the odor of ingested alcohol. Johnson reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol as recently as a half hour before the interaction.

He was taken into custody and charged with two counts each of Identity Theft and Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card, as well as one count of Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, Johnson could be sentenced to up to over 8 years in prison.
