Coralville man accused of masturbating in front of victim held against their will in Iowa City apartment building stairwell

A Coralville man faces charges that he masturbated in front of another person in an Iowa City apartment building stairwell while he kept them against their will.

The alleged incident occurred around 2:00 on the afternoon of May 11^th. Iowa City Police say 44-year-old Jonathan Simpson of Boston Way cornered the victim in a stairwell at 1012 East Burlington Street and began to grope the person’s buttocks against their will while making sexually explicit statements. Simpson then reportedly exposed his penis and began masturbating while making more sexually explicit comments.

The alleged victim was able to break free and escape the stairwell.

Simpson was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 1:30 Friday afternoon and charged with Indecent Exposure and Assault. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
