Allegedly providing a false name to police didn’t stop a Coralville man from being arrested on warrants for assault and drug possession.
According to criminal complaints, 33-year-old Demarco May of 21st Avenue Place was allegedly observed delivering over 55 grams of methamphetamine on the 2000 block of Taylor Drive the afternoon of September 14th. The substance was sent to the DCI lab for testing and confirmed the substance was meth.
May allegedly assaulted his intimate partner on April 10th. He grabbed the woman by the upper arms and shook her, which caused bruising and a scratch on the victim’s arms. May also reportedly took the woman’s phone and threw it to the ground, shattering the screen and leaving it inoperable. He had left the scene by the time officers arrived.
Warrants were issued in both instances, and May remained at large until he was spotted at a business on the 400 block of 1st Avenue in Coralville Tuesday night. He allegedly gave police a false name, but officers recognized him from previous incidents. May reportedly showed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot watery eyes, the odor of ingested alcohol, and acting in an agitated demeanor. He refused a post-arrest PBT.
May faces several charges, including a Controlled Substance violation and Failure to Affix Drug Stamp from the September incident, Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury and 5th degree Criminal Mischief for the April incident, and Providing False ID Information and Public Intoxication for Tuesday’s incident. In total, May could be sentenced to over 31 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
