A North Liberty woman was arrested over the weekend after allegedly making up accusations against a man she originally agreed to date.
Shortly after midnight Sunday, officers were called to the Molly Drive residence of 18-year-old Sumaya Thomas after she alleged that her ex-boyfriend was outside and actively sending her threatening text messages. She also told dispatchers that she was pregnant with the man’s baby and that the messages from him threatened physical harm.
Officers found the man leaving the scene, and he provided a much different narrative.
He told police that he had just started speaking to Thomas a week ago on a dating app that switched over to texting. The man showed the texts to officers, showing he was being truthful about just meeting her.
Thomas kept up her allegations, reportedly saying that she had known the man for two years and that he is abusive and won’t leave her alone. She claimed they communicated on SnapChat when in fact they did so via texts, which Thomas reportedly deleted. Officers were able to get her to admit that the number the man had sent texts to and received from Thomas was hers.
During a third interview, Thomas allegedly stopped lying and admitted to making up the whole thing because she got cold feet about meeting the man and no longer wanted to. She said she didn’t think police would help her, so she called 911 and made up the accusations against the man.
Under Miranda, Thomas again admitted to lying and calling 911 to get police to remove the man from the premises. The would-be suiter was detained for over an hour due to her false accusations.
Thomas was arrested and charged with making a false 911 call and making a false report to a public entity. She faces up to 13 months in jail if convicted on both counts.
