Cedar Rapids man accused of breaking into vehicles in Coralville and using stolen credit cards

A Cedar Rapids man was arrested on a warrant for using two stolen credit cards earlier this spring.

The incidents reportedly took place on March 29th. .  Just before Noon,  28-year-old Daekwon Childs of Midway Drive was allegedly seen entering the victim’s vehicle in the parking lot of the Coral Ridge Mall by witnesses, who were able to get the license plate of the vehicle in which Childs left the scene.

A check of the plate showed the vehicle registered to Childs.

The victim reported missing a wallet with credit cards, social security card and driver’s license. One of the cards was allegedly used a short time later at a nearby store for $317.90. Childs reportedly gave his name and phone number to the clerk at the store.

Childs allegedly did the same thing to a vehicle on the 2400 block of the Coralville Strip a short time later. The victim reported missing $10 in cash, a denomination of Chinese currency, and a Visa credit card from the vehicle.  A short time later, the card was allegedly used at a nearby store for the same $317.90 in charges. Childs reportedly again provided his own name and phone number to the store clerk when he used the card.

Video surveillance allegedly showed Childs using a card from the first theft at a different branch of the store in Cedar Rapids.

A warrant was requested, and Childs was charged with two counts each of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card and 3rd degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.  If convicted on all charges from Johnson County, he could face up to eight years in prison. He also faces three additional charges in Linn County of Unauthorized use of a Credit Card, which could add another six years to his sentence if convicted on all counts.
